really trying to lay it all out here for anyone that cares
You’re doing a great job for real!!!
we in 1962?
one of my favorite songs of all time
the intro to this
biggest revelation since ive started this thread so far is how gody the Ben E King era of The Drifters was
best vocals, harmonies, productions and just straight up songs of that era, soul wise (ray was going a little soft). totally paved the way for Motown and Spectors reign. dont sleep like i did @RVI @Lawdie

and im not even done assimilating their imperial phase yet

ill peep some
also speaking of 1962 i listened to Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music a few times recently and was not feeling it at all. too much traditional pop and big band type of sounds compared to his usual stuff

There Goes My Baby looks like a top 5 most pivotal r&b song to me now, and they just hammered out so many songs within the framework they built there its immaculate
cant believe i thought Ben E King only had Standy By Me basically.
and yeah probably took me half a decade for Modern Sounds to sink in but i think it fully deserves its reputation at this point
Drifters exactly what i wanna hear when i listen to dusty soul though.

the first r&b hit to use strings eh
yeah hopefully ill like the Ray album once i finally come around to Sinatra type stuff which im allergic to now
Please Please Me
next year gonna be a heater when the beatles, beach boys and dylan all find their groove

i think i found one other lower key jam that year that also did but i forgot now. anyway that was the pivotal one.
btw that 1962 Bo Diddley album you found for me is jam packed with crazy ass guitar
sounds like James Burton with Ricky and Bo were really the ones that slowly transitioned rock guitar from the 50's chicken scratch to scorching solos and rhythm with loads of bottom

Haven't had a song that immediately takes my breath away like this since maybe when I found Peter Green
that arrangement is so f***ing elegant

f*** i need to start a thorough digestion of Bo Diddley too past the basic hits

This is definitely his best LP up to that point considering the first couple were more like compilations of his early singles. He was really throttling the hell out of his guitar with absurd precision by '62.
@Lawdie you were wondering at the beginning of the thread who kept rock and roll alive when Chuck was in jail, Richard was born again, Jerry Lee was outcast and Buddy deceased? Definitely Bo and Ricky. Fats and Roy were amazing but not quite taking it all the way with the guitars and energy.

nice, i think im gonna like their doo-wop(/post doo-wop?) sound

You should watch The Five Heartbeats sometime. Good Movie about a group like The Drifters but they couldn’t afford to use the actual name and music

I'm not crazy about the Clyde McPhatter era doo wop stuff. They completely switched styles when Ben E came on and Lieber and Stoller (with Yung Spector in tow) started writing and producing everything (including solo Ben E)

I think I downloaded it when you gave me a music biopic list

Why does this '61 single sound so familiar even though I just got it?

Rolling Stones definitely copied this somewhere
