in an example of wrong choice of single literally dooming a great band, The Zombies chose this f***ing song over Time Of The Season (which was finished) for the lead single to Odyssey & Oracle

the second single tanked as well and by the time Time Of The Season and the album dropped in a few months into 1968 they had split up

the b-side is a low-key psych classic tho

of course its still nice but those were crucial months lost

yeah thats another one of the many many good-not-quite-great songs they had from '65 to early '67. they definitely found an incredible groove in the studio once the O&O sessions got underway cause all thats s***s great.

you ever heard the horns on This Will Be Our Year or have you been stuck with the tragic version without them? literally turns it from an album highlight to a lowlight when they couldnt include them on the hastily made stereo mix

mono Axis is decent but ive decided on the stereo being better, its pretty good. mono maybe wins on a couple tracks slightly but stereo is never really subpar. i still keep the mono around though

Hmm weird I'm skimming through and it sounds like everything is stereo except that song I know the horns you're talking about

That was bait as I'm sure you know Hendrix specifically mastered Axis for stereo (although side one was a rush job because he lost the masters in a taxi)

If only somebody would unearth that lost original version

some of the more straightforward songs have a bit more punch in mono

trying to think of some more mythical ones than just og tapes that could never be remastered

like i remember reading on steve hoffman forum that Disraeli Gears master tapes were lost decades ago. so that + the fact that it was apparently recorded badly will mean itll always sound like total s***

there are probably some good stones outtakes that were lost in decent quality forever. like a few Between the Buttons outtakes i posted a while ago that actually seemed to have decent potential

there were probably some valuable ones lost in the 2008 Universal fire

That universal fire gives me anxiety whenever I read about it I don't even want to know what was lost

not strictly universal fire-related but imagine all the god tier music thats been lost forever

destroyed, thrown away, never heard by anyone, and ofc never recorded

in our era we are used to music being basically invincible but its kinda wild to think about the majority of the art form's history being so fleeting

even worse with film cause celluloid deteriorates so much history lost and its a constant effort to maintain whats out there
