with that statement on the production im just surprised youre not more of a mono purist still, that epitomizes that feeling i get from it. which isnt my absolute favorite but i think i know what you mean
was just listening to Blonde on Blonde stereo and think i actually might prefer mono partially cuz of that
so much of the late 60s-early 70s rock stuff was still so raw and rawkin (increasingly so) that slick isnt the word id use to describe the production at all. more like it brings more clarity so the performances and show more of their power. id guess id say they removed mostly thinking like harder rock here, like imagine Zeppelin or Sabbath with 1966 production and how theyd actually sound neutered af
It was partly the effect of Hendrix making every band have to have a guitar hero doing big giant guitar solos
I need you to hear Roger the Engineer in stereo after hearing you talk about clarity and stuff here is that's exactly the difference for me.
There's something exciting about the constraints of the time and the artist doing the best they can within them that makes it more interesting to hear than when they could do whatever they wanted and the possibilities were endless
same reason silent films are so fascinating to me

ill dl roger stereo. might have actually peeped it years ago when i first listened and instantly discarded cuz i thought it sucked compared to mono, not sure
doing some research rn on Steve Hoffman Forum i see that a few of the stereo songs are fake stereo just rechanneled from mono
plus some of Beck's overdubbed guitar parts missing on stereo namely on Hot House

that part doesnt sound noticeably better in one mix or the other to me. if its the part i think youre referring to. the earlier verse lead guitar part does sound better in stereo tho cuz i always thought it was bizarrely quiet anyway
for the whole album mix isnt terrible but all the reverb on the hard panned vocals alone are almost a dealbreaker for me. and it sounds weird to say it but i feel like the lead guitar is actually too loud on a lot of these songs in stereo, and the way its separated from everything else just makes the whole thing sound disjointed af. its already front and center in mono so i dont need it to be overpowering everything, their underrated rhythm section sounding kinda neutered sometimes. not that the mono mix sounds super amazing or anything though ofc but it just makes it bang harder
those fake stereo ones are actually unlistenable for me though, didnt even make it 30 seconds through Over Under Sideways Down before i had to switch
my verdict is 8/12 songs being decent and 4/12 (Hot House, Over Under, Turn Into earth, Jeffs Boogie) being unlistenable or vastly inferior
@Elric i hope you havent been listening to this one in stereo the whole time, crazy how its literally just missing Beck's amazing lead guitar part. like literally the whole f***in thing
crazy s*** he starts doing at like 2:02 is essential

but didnt you notice how the left ear washboard clatter to counterpoint the solo isn't even there? it has a huge effect on the moment
yeah the hard panned ones were the first to go :vom: (something ive been meaning to do for years)

what year is that CD from?
Do you not hear it on either version? only hear a little bit of it at the beginning of the solo on the mono version

i didnt notice it at first. wasnt doing a direct comparison or anything just listening stereo whole way through. also not one of my favorite songs on the album in general tbh

realized it was the Quicksilver covered but it wasnt actually Gordons

is the gordon album any good?
Yeah it's sinking in even though I'm kinda not in folk mode
gonna keep it going after hearing Dylan's praise
that and:
-elvis going to the army and selling out in general for hollywood
-richard getting reborn
-pervy chuck going to jail
-pervy jerry marrying his child cousin
having said that Fats, Bo and especially Ricky held it down
We both forgot about Cochran smh

Not even sure if I had realized how good he was when I posted that
recent fan. He was definitely a true rocker.
