thats just rock bro
he contributed more to heavy metal, but musically and vocally there are a couple that have that driving force that reminds me a bit of punk
what do you consider the first proto punk bands/tracks

what songs? and how is that driving force different than just straight up archetypical RAWK
i dont really like to use the word proto punk that much but MC5 and Stooges are when I would use it more often. I would still call things like the Sonics, Monks, a few Who songs, Louie Louie proto-punk it just wouldn't be the first word I use to describe them. also because it's just not a very descriptive word musically

Dang youre keeping it even realer than me
Dylan’s the über goat but pitting his 5-8 min lyrical journeys against all these different pop/rock songs that do so much in under 3 mins is not fair to him at all. Aftermath is such a rocking album that I would have it at #2 if the tracklisting was better. Revolver is obv phenomenal but it has real competition to me.

I’ve told you before that because no one knows when punk rock actually began and ended, it leads to people constantly guessing
Doors, Hendrix, VU and Love enter the scene next year
already in the scene

maybe but thats not really the same convo as the "proto punk" adjective unless youre talking about arguing if some of the earlier 70s stuff can be "true" punk yet or just proto punk which is kinda separate. and also uninteresting
also shoutout to the boomers who just call all 60s garage rock "punk", in a way i can kinda respect that more
No songs out at this time
i mean besides doors they all had songs out by then...or even 2 full on albums in love's case
and doors released january 4 1967 anyway so barely missed it

VU did have songs out but I wonder who the f*** actually heard those in 66 lol
Yeah almost everyone from this era has been called proto-punk by somebody at some point but I feel like Van might have come closest with Them which is funny and fitting because he probably gives the least f***s about getting any sort of credit
kinks and you really got me is really much closer imo.

I agree that “garage rock” should be used instead of proto-punk way more

yea I guess it's kind of a term that's thrown around too much but it's interesting to speculate. that beatles thread though
only ones I was thinking was Manic Depression and Fire
real ones who were tapped in

didn't realize they were already playing shows

They played shows before even thinking about getting into a studio
