The only 5/5's for the year imo
Seen Only Angels Have Wings?
Man oh man even if you "aren't interested in touching the politics in this", I can't believe how lame and annoying 4 hours of Scarlett/Ashley/Rhett love triangle was
gf and I just wanted to strangle Scarlett for the entire runtime. Crammed 4 hours of character development into the last 2 minutes for her.
You seen the Carol Burnett parody of it?

S*** is Mel Brooks-tier. You and the gf should watch it.

I’m a big n00b with the old movies. What were the Germans up to this year? (film-wise
)

The Japanese, Soviet and especially German golden eras had almost dried up by this point (not surprisingly)
Hate to admit it but France and Hollywood were carrying.

You gotta see Cary Grant in Only Angels
like a low budget Fantasia
Chrysanthemums is a stunner but man I have no idea what these actors actually look like
so far away from the camera
@RASIE @rowjaystan

Lmaooo
American propaganda documentary about the Sino-Japanese war that doesnt bother to go into details about the Chinese civil war, and had clearly chosen sides by portraying Chiang Kai-Shek as the only one standing up to the Japanese. No mention of Mao beyond the "superior guerrilla tactics being employed in the north".
Still a pretty stunning glimpse of old pre-war China, some really beautiful photography.

@Snowboy you'll love this
ive seen this before, some of the best wwii era footage that exists

Definitely
but I was being sarcastic about the love cause they wouldn't acknowledge the communist contributions to the resistance

afaik the director was personal friends with zhou enlai and the film went through kmt censorship, so that might have something to do with it
but even still basically everyone at that time underestimated the Red Army, regardless of whether you sympathized with them or not

Ah you think the PRC initially had more of a focus but got censored?
Expected more of the Red Army after that director did a pretty good doc on the Spanish Civil wars a few years prior, and wasn't afraid to give the USSR credit for sending help
Equal parts impressive and scary (for the stuntman)
Re-do this on imgur already will you
