  • Lowkey sadly more important than lyricism

Who got some of the worst and best beat selection? Bro its so hard to make it thru some Nas albums

Lowkey boring/predictable beats is an understated reason why people don’t like late stage Drake music (post DLDT)

But then again it’s like niggas don’t get tired of Ross doing the relative same sonics so it’s tricky

And then a nigga like Billy Woods can’t just pop out on a BeatsbyTaz Bossman DLow type beat lmao

  • Those tapes Herbo did with Southside really did me in

People did get tired of Ross pretty much ever since the late 2010’s

Still looking forward to Set in stone this month

Not only did allot of rappers used to have character but the beats themselves on their albums would have their own character.

Lol yeah but at its worst its devolved into people completely relying on the beat and not really adding nothing to it

Thats really the largest subgenre in rap right now

That ain't the beat fault. These young niggas can't and don't read, that's all the problem lol

That goes for artists and consumers

  • For a dude of his status, Wayne's beat selection skills are pitiful.

    Facts
One of the bad things about the south/post Lex Luger takeover is that uniqueness and original quirkyness has been whittled down from a lot of rap beats, just a dark melody and trap drums type s***

I think this has hurt Kanye and Drake the most ironically. They used to have such defined yet somehow still unpredictable sonic palettes and ironically they now over rely on just rotating the same tropes + trappy or boom bap drums

Listening to old Wu and Roc a Fella, beats used to completely define a label’s aesthetic everyone couldnt just use the same s***

Like that glittery yet futuristic pre Kanye Just Blaze Roc A Fella sound that niggas could only get from f***ing around on a drum machine lol

You can’t make s*** like this in FL without feeling like you making some bullshit lmao

  • Dont even need to limit it to rap. Beat selection and production knowledge the most important skill set to have as an artist imo.

DJ was more important than the MC in the origins too tbf

Facts. When he used to hit he really hit (Mrs officer blunt blowin let the beat build 3 peat) but after like 2011-2013 his beat choices mostly suck

And before you know the narrative of the lyrics the beat has already been felt throughout the body

Yeah in the pre “type beat” era that was true today finding a good beat is just a YouTube search away

  • i can see why some would argue why the production on drake's recent albums is a bit boring and safe but to me the bigger issue with the production his overreliance on beat switches and how some of the switches don't flow that well

so that's why DaBaby was suffocating those beats by starting his raps at 0:00:00 on that album a while back

he was tryna change rap for the better

  • Mr Fitz

Yeah in the pre “type beat” era that was true today finding a good beat is just a YouTube search away

I think that makes refined beat selection even more important

Hella generic post Lucki post Future post who or whatever type beats but can you carve out a specific soundscape that matches you

I think the audience and even artists tryna carve up the DNA of music into "most important" tiers ignoring that it's all literally importantis the real issue

Tier lists and top lists brain rot, "efficiency" and a***ytical tricked yourself out the position and reality like a dork n ending up worst than before
