i feel like im seeing 3.5/5 from cregger stans, who think it doesnt reach the heights of his last ones but is a very fun time

and 4.5/5 from people who werent in on cregger before, appreciating that this one sheds some of his thematic/formal/framing trickery and just goes super sleek, lean and fun

    accurate assessment

I really liked this. Abrams is a great lead. The film balances tension and levity really well. It maintains the goofiness of the source material which I enjoyed. I like that it’s a video game movie that feels fully influenced by the medium of video games, rather than just lifting the IP. Really hope Cregger decides to return for a sequel, I’d love to see him take on some of the other iconic settings from the games

  • Cregger is a master of writing small character moments where the character makes a decision or has a reaction that’s exactly how the audience is reacting at the same time. Peele does this well also. I think that’s why Cregger was a perfect fit for a video game adaptation because he already writes his movies like the main character is being controlled/played by the audience

that interview he had about taking in the structure of the games, and entering new sections for each act of the movie has me really intrigued

Gonna guess that the first aid thing he's carrying to deliver is a cure (or at least maybe it supposed to be) for the T-Virus. Idk but I think that's going to be important at the end. Reviews got me excited asf for this man. Can't wait to see all the creature designs and how much the trailers left out

i'm pretty sure he's just a medical courier my dude

Elden Ring is gonna be fascinating to see, especially given that Garland is such a cerebral filmmaker.

it's gonna be polarizing for sure, there's no real map to make an adaptation of a game as loose as elden ring.

is the protagonist gonna be as clueless as the player at the start? there's a lot of narrative depth there, which is the exciting part for me

This was fun, I liked it but think it was extremely overhyped. Prolly my least favorite Creggers out the 3

I think cregger makes fun one time watches. He clearly loves the immediate thrills and tensions found in Craven and Carpenters work but he never understood the deeper substance in their works that made those thrills land the way they did. Weapons has the immediate thrills that you latch onto but as a story about community, isolation, fearmongering, loss of innocence (themes Cregger is clearly interested in with the film), it comes up extremely short. You get very little in the way of the substance in the film because it’s far more interested in its surface level shifted perspective storytelling to reply same plot beats to you but to give you a different perspective to it all to land on what is a very predictable and simple story with very little underneath its skin.

Have to agree with you for once, this was a very surface level straightforward film. Not really much to unpack

It’s LITERALLY Resident Evil, that’s the whole point. It’s a roller coaster movie, that’s legitimately what Cregger himself has been calling it.

Genuinely nonsensical to go into this expecting anything more than having a good time.

No, I’m just saying that this movie is clearly intended to be elevated shlocky horror like the series itself and that it’s kind of odd to criticize something for not being what it was never going to be, and never presented as.

And considering The Flood is coming down the pipe and seems to be much more aligned with his previous two films, it seems especially obvious what this one is going for.

They had a whole pregnant GF side narrative to try and add a little substance to bros character. It just ain’t hit like that, don’t be mad.

  • That’s not even a critique on the movie, that’s just pointing out the obvious and agreeing with @ImLikeThat for once.

A real critique would be how Creggers always has the same issues in his films where he will write something that is strictly to push the plot a certain direction and not cus it makes any logical sense.

Regardless his films are fun but yall gotta stop acting fanned out whenever anyone says the smallest thing that isn’t glazing

  • One hour till I’m seated for this. Dolby. Soooo hype
