SCOTUS heard a case putting forth a political theory referred to as the "independent state legislature" that would have allowed states to make their own rules regarding how they run federal elections without judicial oversight. So the legislature would be fully in control of drawing congressional maps and casting electoral votes. This would allow states to gerrymander the ever living s*** out of their state to benefit one party over the other with no recourse. It would also allow states to determine how they appoint presidential electors. So the legislature would be able to appoint electors that could cast their states electoral votes for anyone regardless of the outcome of the presidential election in that state.

It would make your vote for House Reps and president effectively useless because you would be in a gerrymandered district where you are either in a super majority or super minority and the electors could ignore the statewide presidential results.

The fact that it was 2 votes away from being held legal is frightening.

The right has been poking and prodding at the institution for decades, but in recent years they have dropped all pretense and are now completely up front about their plans to dismantle democracy and embrace authoritarianism.

Every election we have for the foreseeable future will be the most important election of our lives.

The 2024 election will be the most important election in our lives.

Then, in 2026, that will be the most important election in our lives.

Then in 2028.....etc.

Because the very first time we take our foot off the gas and allow the GOP to grab a foothold, that will be it.
