This isn't exactly true. That whole "south hates NY" narrative is one piece. It doesn't tell the entire story because there was a lot of pieces involved including the 96 Olympics and the mass migration of black people moving to Atlanta. They didn't exactly do it on their own, they had help from people up north who'd moved down there. Half of my extended family on my mother's side even moved to Atlanta after living in NYC the majority of their lives during that time.

On the music side even people like Puff, Phife Dawg, Deb Antney and the Roc in its early days had relocated there. Jaz-O did an interview in 95-96 stating he'd bought a house down there, and that it would soon become a hub for black music.
