I dont think it was explained, but i think it was a mix of rod reiss being of royal blood and him licking the titan serum instead of injecting it in his veins/spine

Think there are a few plotholes here and there, but nothing too major. Things like how there were eventually 9 shifters, and the Ackerman family hasn't been explained properly, should make Gabi's mother an Ackerman though, would explain some of the things she's able to do
