Rundown of stuff that’s come out in the last couple days possibly pointing to the demise of HBO Max.

Aug 2: Grace Randolph claimed that HBO Max will be folded into Discovery+ in some degree. Max as a stand-alone app will no longer exist and existing Max original series will either be scrapped or pushed onto mainline HBO. HBO will still exist as a television network and will have a dedicated tab on Discovery+. The service will focus on unscripted TV series.

Aug 2: Reddit users notice that six HBO Max original movies have been quietly removed. HBO Max content such as The Big Bang Theory, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, and more begin appearing on Amazon Prime Video. IndieWire claim more shows and films will be removed from HBO Max with shows that haven’t been performing well and those they could get a tax write-off on being the targets.

Aug 3: Warner Bros Discovery order 149 hours of new unscripted television series for the United Kingdom. WBD hire staff to bolster UK streaming management. UK doesn’t have HBO Max, only Discovery+.

Aug 3: Variety report that Warner Bros Discovery WILL give details on the planned merger of HBO Max and Discovery+ this Thursday. The merger has been announced for som etime.

Aug 3: Grace Randolph one day later claims that the HBO Max won’t be folded into Discovery+, instead it’ll be a new “mega service” which won’t have HBO or Discovery in the name. HBO Max original scripted shows will be pushed onto mainline HBO or scrapped. Expecting a CNN+ style bloodbath for Max employees.

Aug 3: The Wrap report that a “major restructuring” of HBO Max and Discovery+ is set to be announced. The move will “gut” HBO Max with significant layoffs planned - possibly around 70%. HBO will combine with Discovery+ and will have a hard line of separation on scripted and unscripted content.

Aug 4: THR report that CNN original content will begin releasing on Discovery+ and content from the Magnolia Network such as home renovation shows will debut on HBO Max. The outlet adds that HBO Max and Disc+ will merge into one, likely next year, and create a new streaming service. Magnolia Network content will debut on HBO Max in September while CNN originals will debut on Disc+ this August.

Aug 4: MSN report that Warner Bros Discovery are considering creating a separate ad-supported free service that will contain classic Warner Bros movies as they garner little attention on HBO Max.
