This isn't fair. GDT has been extremely vocal about the theatrical experience even during this Frankenstein run. Not a fan of pointing at him after the fact when he had few options for getting his vision to screen. Its not him nor Netflix to blame for that..its the studios.

Reality is a lot of legends have been forced to work with studios like Netflix because the Hollywood landscape (including WB) has been s***ty for several years. It looked the other way at many of the most respected guys (who are also the loudest voices behind theaters). If there's anyone to blame, its the studios. Why should Scorsese have to work with Netflix and Apple?

Frankenstein in 35mm was my first time seeing a Netflix film in theaters (i think?) and part of that was GDT's own push. I'm not even a huge fan of his or anything.

GDT has been boxed in by studios for like his whole career. How did he still struggle with funding immediately after shape of water , it's crazy. He does what he has to do because he loves cinema, even with limitations

That's fair. It's a shame that Frankenstein didn't get picked up by a different studio who could've distributed it properly, it definitely deserves a wider release

I'm curious about the generational divide when it comes to visiting theatres

"According to a Yahoo News/YouGov Survey conducted May 22-27, 2025, Americans surveyed say they prefer to wait to see a new movie when it’s available on streaming (61%) rather than seeing it in theaters (23%). But young adults under 30 are the age group most likely to head to the cinema, according to the poll... 54% of Gen Z-ers surveyed said they want “an experience I can’t get at home.”

Older folks are more likely to have nicer in home theatres compared to younger people who are mostly renters/living with roommates void of fancy in home setups. This is one factor but doesn't explain the whole picture. Could it be that boomers are more likely to watch random slop films on streaming that don't necessitate an in-theatre experience, busier with other hobbies, and may also be more fearful of random crowds of strangers? What other reasons come to mind? Anecdotally there's an indie theatre downtown where I live that's always packed with retirees, I love to see it even though they can be annoying sometimes

GDT and Scorsese have to work with Netflix and Apple because traditional studios need their movies to make money
