Solidarity between minorities doesn't really exist. It sounds cute in theory when a POC speaks about all minorities unifying but the truth is everyone hates us (black people) not just racist white people. It used to f*** me up finding out or realizing how prejudice or racist a lot of my my non black POC friend's families were/are but it is what it is. At the end of the day the only people that are really going to have our backs is ourselves and we cant even get it together to do that in most cases we are so divided.

It will be our own too. If they did it to Malcom X, MLK, Jesus etc they'll destroy anything that heads toward growth and unity.

In the twitter thread op posted, it took one black woman defending asian people to derail the growth of a black owned business.

S***, never thought about it this way before

Racism is really, really complex. I'm very conscious of how it's woven into society, but I only realized this a few years ago. As long as there is a bottom group and a top group, the inbetween group will try to associate with and get access to the top group. Often at the expense of the bottom group.
This is behavior seen in almost all social settings and many social animals. You can observe a similar phenomenon on a smaller scale in children as young as 5 years old in elementary school. The nerdy/uncool kids play with eachother, the regular kids play with eachother and the popular kids play with eachother. The regular kids like it when the popular kids give them attention and play with them because it raises their social value. Meanwhile associating with the uncool kids will get you grouped in with them, at the bottom. Some will bully the nerdy/uncool kids to cut all association with them off.
Obviously it's a different setting and racism is much more complex than this, but it works in a similar way. As long as hierarchy exists people will want to dissociate from the bottom, and climb up.

Saying it's a win for non black POC is disrespectful. Asian Americans has been treated like a monolith, and historically been used as a tool by white people.

The model minority myth is often used as a cudgel against other poc. The MMM is a specific construct emerging in mid-60’s against the backdrop of Jim Crow dismantlement & Black people’s growing demands for political equity.
During this period, rather than addressing these demands thru structural changes or social reorg, the Johnson administration released a report which essentially blamed Black poverty on dysfunctional families and asserted it as inherent to Black culture itself.
Simultaneously, Asian-Americans were juxtaposed as a group of immigrants who self-sufficiently moved ahead w/o outside help, self-disciplined, hard-working, submissive. a racial minority that could seamlessly assimilate without making demands for institutional change.
Within this Cold War context, the model minority embodied the Protestant work ethic of obedience, individualism, and loyalty to the nuclear family. as opposed to international solidarity or social consciousness as advocated by Black radicalism.
That’s how that model minority construct and the Asian-American desire for assimilation operates and continues to operate in the service of white supremacy, even to this day.

One of the most detrimental effects of the model minority myth is that it treats all Asians in the US as a monolith, rendering invisible those that don't fit the narrative. In NYC, for ex, AsAms suffer from the highest poverty rate of any racial group

chief i get what ur saying bout the model minority myth and that parts true but the model minority myth has nothing to do w them saying its a win for non black poc

    huh???

    Also wanted to add:
“White is right” is a common attitude among many in Asian countries. When Asian people immigrate here, they want to be aligned with white people since white is pitched to them as the norm. As soon as they find some acceptance from whites, they get sucked into this world of white supremacist ideology. Thus, it’s easy for a lot of Asians to fall for white-created stereotypes about black people. They think the model minority myth is a good thing for Asians. Those who know better know it’s far from the truth.

A lot of Asians out there are brainwashed into thinking we’re aligned with white people. If only they knew the truth. If only they knew how we are fetishized as objects and circus animals to white people.

The white worship among lots of Asians is sickening and embarrassing. We’re just a prop for white people to use to prevent and reduce solidarity among minorities, and I know that.

It doesn’t help that colorism has been a prevalent theme in some Asian countries as well, so they had this concept of white being best and black being worst long before they touched American soil. Colorism definitely needs to be eliminated in Asian countries as well.

I think it just might be too tough a pill to swallow for a lot of Asian kids these days to accept that in a lot of ways, they're no better off than Black people in terms of how they are viewed by white people. I follow this radical Asian chick on twitter who exposes a lot of tap dancing Asians do so they can secure their place in white communities even as far as putting down their homelands so they don't seem "othered" or viewed as an enemy. I know that is an issue Asian people themselves have to work on and not my place to speak entirely on it but I can't help but think that conversation is brought up in AsAm or As communities than anti black ones are. Honestly, I think we are pretty f***ed because we have no youthful movements going on in this country compared to the 1900s where so much s*** was going on we just have "safe spaces" now but nobody is fighting we just coping

Who’s pitching this “white is right” idea huh? White people making informational videos to Asians who immigrate here?

We got a department of “white is right” is the American immigration service?

if you're seeking outside validation, especially as it pertains to race, then you're allowing them to hold power over you.

Just like we ignoring the amount of Asians who perform blackface to operate in Hip Hop communities, yes.

Google: akwafina, jaypark, keith ape etc

ALSO black people are more than HIP HOP. cut that bullshit out, it is not our defining cultural contribution.

Asian people of course. I’m not placing the blame strictly on white people. I know colorist attitudes existed in our home countries long before white people had any effect.

We really need Donald trump to do some sort of ban on Asian countries or something to get Asian people to realize white peoples aren’t angels and the race they have to align themselves with, either they choose to ignore how white people see all minorities and just fetishize other ones or they flat out don’t care as long as u got light skin

I think Asian rappers are beginning to get it due to the criticism they received. Jay Park grew in Seattle, so he’s naturally more into the culture than the ones in the East are. For a lot of these guys, it’s a matter of being unaware about social customs in regards to what’s okay to do as a non-black hip-hop artist and what’s off limits. It’s usually not from a place of hate or mockery, but rather a place of ignorance.

Hip hop is still a new genre to the world. The spread in popularity is a great thing, but I agree it should be carried out respectfully.

to be honest racism is about power structures. one line of anti asian sentiment in a hip hop song may be corny, but a black person cannot systemically oppress an east asian person really. and i think people have also become a lot more aware of their own words in recent times as well. furthermore i really don’t think anti-asian sentiment by black people is at all of a comparable experience to anti-black sentiment by asians, because colorism in asia has been a thing since pre-western contact even—it’s a lot more deep rooted and older generations take it very seriously.

Yup and when it comes to hip hop I think its mutual universal because, as far as I know, nobody is looking to hip hop artists or rappers generally for their social insight or intellectual quips

Which is why I hate it being brought into any convo for the most part because it just isn't the right place to start - its hip hop/rap, half the lyrics about killing people or dumb s*** we just love it cuz its ignorance we cant project irl

america is incredibly anti china as a result of red-scare type mentality. china went through the opium wars with britain, japan went through hiroshima/nagasaki as a result of the us. the vietnam war happened. etc etc.

that simply would not have any impact at all, especially since while colorism does on some level have to do with overvaluing western culture, colorism in asia runs a LOT deeper than that.
