Black Panthers may have started off with Marxism-Leninism, but as time went on, many Black radicals and revolutionaries came to heavily critique it because it often failed to address racial oppression and inequality.
CLR James, Kwame Ture, Amiri Baraka frequently critiqued Marxist-Leninism. WEB DuBois was one of the first to critique it. While it served as a decent stepping stone, when it came to the plight of Blacks, Africans, and Afro-Caribbeans there were many holes within the ideology.
Marxism-Leninism tends to ignore the conflict of race and focuses on class. While that isn't necessarily "bad", it ignores the very clear disadvantages that Blacks face. Essentially, being for the abolition of slavery. Cool. But being against reparations. Bad.
And this is just one, of many, things that non-Black Marxist-Leninists still struggle with today. Which is why to me they continued to get side-eyed whenever they try to speak over Black political thinkers and revolutionaries. They just don't get it, and instead of having that real conversation, they tend to get mad and start showing some interesting true colors
They were revising and extending Marx and Lenin’s ideas rather than abandoning communism alltogether. It’s important to note that they didn’t cross into liberalism, social democracy, or anti-communism as a political endpoint, they were critiquing Eurocentric perspectives essentially becoming what people today call Black Marxists. Besides the Black Panthers I think, after they got infiltrated & disrupted by the CIA.
Also, ML doesn’t ignore the conflict of race. Class is seen as the “principal contradiction” yes but that doesn’t mean that race isn’t instrumental. Marx a***yzed slavery, colonialism, and racialized labor for a reason. Lenin explicitly treated national oppression, imperialism, and colonial domination as central to capitalism for a reason.
