Religion is a coping mechanism?
Maybe for most people in how they handle christianity and the afterlife but I promise those people have not read or thought about their holy scripture.
If you look at other religions across the world there's a big embrace of the unknown. and it's just a guide to a way to live your life to be fulfilling.
if religion and spirituality was looked at as a philosophy instead of a way to a pure afterlife. We wouldn't be having this conversation.
I swear to GOD religion is the worst coping mechanism invented in this world if you're using it as a coping mechanism just get addicted to d**** buying s***or some other s***. It's way easier and less of a headache.

theres tons of african tribes that werent religiously motivates who still did all that over territory or differences in culture or whatever, even to this day
theres people in south america killing each other over money, people in the united states murdering others because they got on the wrong colors

When imperialism, oppression, genocide, and more atrocities were and are motivated by religion it is easy to put it in such a box despite many other factors leading to it.

Obv s*** like Buddhism etc is more planted in reality and not as self aggrandizing as other religions but just as a general concept religion came to be bc humans dont know what/why/how/where they are and want to fill in the holes.
