probs biggest criticism of my own political ideology (socdem) is that while standards in countries are high they have to exploit poorer countries ie the global south to keep up and support us westerners

There are European nations that are very rich, like Switzerland and Austria, that did no or almost no colonization. And there are nations that had a lot of colonization that have fallen into mediocrity, like Spain and Portugal.

Germany also did a very small of amout of colonialism (Tansania and Namibia for some Years).

The modern wealth is more tied to the industrial revolution and its consequences. Of course colonialism and slavery are tied to industrial revolution but also innovative trading and manufacturing logistics.

In a philosophical way the industrial revolution is also tied with the european enlightenment (Kant/Hegel/Rousseau/Marx) which effected the birth of states, human rights and also economic innovations.

European Countries (Japan too -> ending of the Samurai society) reformed themselves in this time, while many asian empires like china fell off. Countries who were stuck in feudalism or in feudal society had it very hard of course

Wealth goes up based on productive capacity, and natural resources

Europe didnt have natural resources, so it expended to acquire them. Tbis allowed them to produce in their factories and grow wealthier and more productive

That being said, they didnt NEED to colonise to do it, they could have traded instead.

After the second world war many europan colonial were so broke, they couldnt hold the administration for their colonies, especially UK. This why India, Pakistan and later the african states were born.
