How is no one pointing out the fact they create heat islands in 6 mile radius and I think 2 mile radius is the humming that will drive you insane good thing one one is being built 4 miles away from my job
Explaining the water cycle to luddites....
The same people complaining about new science didnt pass grade 4 science.

Look at how the title question is phrased though. No ones saying they have no harmful effects, but they don't often reach the caliber that's claimed on random social media posts.
While there's been genuine claims and concerns, there's also been fantastical claims about what data centers are and do.
US carbon emissions from the power grid rose 4.4% in 2025 due to delaying retirement for & adding new capacity in coal & natural gas plants to meet increased electricity demand, which is entirely due to datacenter expansion
My understanding is that the energy usage is not insignificant but it’s not any different from like, YouTube. But nobody has an issue with YouTube
I feel like I have much bigger concerns with the consequences of ai than it’s energy use

niggas will see this and hear “hyperscale data centers consume more water than 100k houses per second” and say nahhhhh, I don’t think so

AI data centers consume 20x more power than YouTube power storage data centers
ya’ll really gotta stop this downplaying man…they cooking us at an even faster rate than before and niggas just saying “eh, it’s just another google”
All this is being done in service of these silicon valley deathcult freaks who each want to be the first to bring their machine god to life btw

AI is a new frontier and there is a bubble right now so grifters rush to make profit off of that and all the funding and manpower from government, etc is going towards that instead of fixing the ever increasing problems in america,
The USA is a pressure cooker right now until our current regime ends and it will end, As all regimes do, They are already eating themselves alive while revolutionary thought raises amongst almost every age group.
It's wild times in america.
I mean it being a bubble isn't really going to stop data centers from being built though. They'd still be necessary to support energy and compute for AI systems and cloud service. It would just bring company values down to realistic levels, assuming they're bloated right now.
For instance, dot com bubble didn't result in less internet or physical infrastructure, it actually sped up the process for buildout as the commercial side adjusted to reality.
they’re literally building data centers for the already built AI data centers to process all the data they currently holding
and you niggas saying it’s not that bad???

This is partially due to lack of U.S. energy improvements and updates though. It's not like we're permanently confined to limited energy.
Very different scenario is happening in China where they have less advanced data centers and chips, but an overcapacity of energy and electricity that keeps prices down. They add more solar in a single year than we have in our entire history, and then it compounds when they increase the following year.
At some point we're simply going to be forced into real modernization and green transition finally as both citizens and companies would benefit from

I’m not comparing a particular data center of one vs the other I’m comparing my individual use as a consumer on one vs the other

your individual usage is a microcosm of the capacities of the same tool you are using and its impact on the environment due to those usages. your “it’s just another google” is probably the most basic way to use the tool and you’d know cause your power bill would be through the roof if you were utilizing the tools they have built to expand the capabilities of AI agents. like a cluster of Mac minis to make one AI supercomputer in your bedroom. that’s not just Google man lol
My ex gf who I was with for 6 years, mom and dad and by extension her, just became multi-millionaires because of data center wanting to buy all the land where their house was and they had a bunch of acres
Dozens of people I know from my hometown became millionaires overnight

Its getting a bit unrealistic to separate the two, as YouTube is owned by Google, who is increasingly merging Deepmind, Gemini, etc across all the platforms they own. Like sure we can separate individual videos vs an AI model search, but there's a lot clouding this too.
YouTube is increasingly powered by Google's AI data centers that also power search and cloud. Even making a simple Google search on default settings generates AI results before you see the first link, and thus using the same energy as ChatGPT searches. Most people don't even realize they're doing this
At some point, these all will be blurry to compartmentalize when everything is "AI enabled" in some way, especially if its the same parent company
Dumbass post, particular water-stressed regions exist
Yes the redistribution into a dofferent water table exist and i am against data centres in cases of water hurting regions.
My point was how its being used as a catch all like "think of the childrem'
