Idk if this is what that article is even about, but Apple hasn't really done anything substantial or head-turning with the iPhone in several years, on any level — product design, UI/X, interesting novelty features, etc... And I mean in a good way, not something like axing the headphone jack.

iPhone is basically the poster child for "phones are no longer fun." (Granted, it also arguably spearheaded that development in the industry.)

Over the past few years there's at least been some genuine experiments and interesting gimmicks from other brands, some more successful than others.

LG put out the wild looking, but not fully-thought-out Wing phone. Huawei and others have experimented with how front cameras are implemented, with mechanical pop-out cameras from the top of the phone to placing it invisibly behind the screen surface. And most recently (and notably, Samsung has been full-throttle with foldable designs.

Meanwhile, Apple has made tiny little infant steps regarding improvements and features with every new model since like iPhone 8. They've made their camera arrays and tech such a huge part of their showcase each year, and it's not exciting. They say the bew phone has better battery life every year, and it's not exciting. The way they make "big announcements" for features that have been available on other OS/devices for years has gone from being a meme to just something that's expected in the most boring way.

It really seems like Apple has just been far more focused on experimenting and reinventing their software and systems, while hardware and design are just in some kind of auto-pilot streamlining mode. It says a lot when the most interesting or novel announcements in virtually every Apple event over the past several years have been things available on multiple Apple devices.

I still prefer to use Apple's phones and computers over Android or Windows-based ones. But i really miss seeing something new and exciting that i cant wait to get ahold of and use, instead of nonstop micro "updates" for the everlasting candybar phone. I was playing with a Z Fold 4 in the AT&T store today while i was waiting for my upgrade to complete, and part of me wanted to run to the worker and tell them i've changed my mind haha
