nigga Kendrick’s debut was Section 80, it wasnt GKMC. Section 80 was released in 2011 and it was always treated like an album, Overly Dedicated was the last mixtape he released
just say you weren’t there
^you always know somebody trolling when they say sxn 80, a completely in house produced mixed and mastered record
is his debut album
J. Cole literally the only one out of the big 3 who completely owns the masters of all of his albums because Jay sold them to him, but apparently Jay did nothing for this nigga
J Cole is a Nas stan,
he doesn’t f*** with Jay Z off principle but he respects the blessing of signing to him
In the Cole & Yachty interview, he told a story of camping out in front Def Jam tryna give Jay a beat CD and Jay curved the f*** outta him lmaooo
Bro said him and Ib was eating McDonald’s like f*** Jay z!
well, define "out the gate" because they all were in different cycles at different times early on each playing catch up year after year.
in 2010 drake debuted and was certainly hot as fish grease #1 solo album, top 5 solo single (find your love), featured on a #1 single (whats my name) and already headlining arenas 70+ dates $8million gross. while cole was at peak in his mixtape era also xxl freshman, cracked the charts for the first time (who dat and all i want is you) and headlined a college tour. at this same time kendrick was just extending his reach outside of california/westcoast for the first time with his mixtapes.
In 2011 it was Cole's turn, he saw his first taste of high commercial success along with his mildly recieved but #1 charting debut album. work out went charted at 15 and he had a few solos as well as features circulating urban radio as well while also opening in arenas for Rihanna and headlining his first world tour. While Kendrick was now xxl freshman, peaking and having his run as king of the underground with section80 and also touring with Drake. Drake was garnering massive acclaim and began dominating with Take Care.
In 2012 Kendrick debuted with a #2 album and while he is the only of the three to NOT debut at #1 he did outsell Coles debut first week and received far more critical acclaim than cole did the previous year as well as drake in 2010. Also seeing plenty commercial success and mainstream breakthrough having his own top 20 debut single (swimming pools) and appearing as a feature on a top 10 single (fuckin problems) while also charting in urban radio through solos and features.
So if we were to rank the three respective debut album years of the three (2010,2011,2012) based upon overall successful output, critical reception, sales, charting, and let's say impact no doubt i would say it has to go
1. Drake(2010)
2. Kendrick(2012)
3. J. Cole(2011)
Kendrick’s debut was 2011

so because cole couldnt afford to clear samples at the time or have his own Sounwave/team and be able to sell FNL for 9.99 we gotta give him more props for having a fully fleshed out major debut

a project made by like 3 mfs with no budget or advance and then put online for $10 and a cole tape with samples that cant get cleared is the same s*** to me idk

I was there. I was following kendrick since overly dedicated. sxn80 didnt become an "album" until it was released, they decided to sell it as an album. But up until then it was always just his next mixtape but they just decided to sell it. good kid had already been teased as his debut album by then, the title was already mentioned and in the air as his debut.
