these aren’t traits everyone is gunna like in an anime character, but to act as if they aren’t there and that everyone just likes her for the waifu bait is plain ignorance.

not saying it doesn’t happen/isn’t intended a lot of the time tho. and if you call it wish fulfillment even without the viewer identifying with the MC/doubt the viewer’s ability to separate themselves from the MC, then you’re applying that criticism to literally any story in which the main character falls in love/has a love interest 
The magic of the self-insert MC is that you can target self-inserters with multiple different types of MC. In the case of Hiro, being bland and having no strong personality traits lets people self-insert because Hiro wouldn't do or say anything that goes against their own personality. Self-inserters get to sit back, relax, and let a cute dino GF aggressively declare her love for them without the pesky MC doing or saying anything that would break their immersion.

Actually, since we're on this topic, now's a pretty decent time to drop my hot take: if a female character is romantically interested in the male MC (aka the viewer), they are automatically disqualified from being a good character.
The common character traits of the most popular anime girls are:
1. They're attractive
2. Not romantically interested in anyone except for the MC
3. Unconditionally loyal to the MC despite the MC's flaws
4. Usually takes the initiative to declare their love first (optional)Wanting the MC's cock is not an interesting personality trait. Wish fulfillment ruined anime.
I agree and disagree. I agree that there are a lot of anime with self insert, blank slate male main characters and the perfect, pretty female love interest who is mostly interested in them. It’s the kind of escapism a lot of anime viewers want.
I disagree because you can make a character like that interesting. Maybe make her personality stand out more than her attraction to the boring male character. Or if it’s a romance it works more because the story is about a relationship anyway, so they might as well be romantic towards each other. Most of the good romances focus on both love interests equally.
