Ya, I watched it while it was airing. I think it kinda fumbled narratively toward the end so I don't really have it that highly regarded to other shows I like, but it's still better than most stuff I've seen.

Visually though, I have it in my top 5 all time. It excelled in everything I care about when it comes to anime visuals: consistently great animation throughout the episode instead of just saving it for big action scenes, and storyboarding and colour design that actually communicates ideas without needing character dialogue.

I think it'll be a good watch if you want to start diving into the second level of those types of niche shows that are loved by more experienced or critical watchers (or "elitist" watchers since I see that term getting thrown around for these shows). In the anime circles I frequent, where the average person has like 750 completed shows, it's consistently one of the most loved shows. And I remember at the time it came out, basically all the theme and subtext focused anibloggers wrote about it.

Starting this tonight im always interested in shows that seem “ambitious” if that’s the right term. The cult following of the show mentions that the team had a lot of creative freedom. Pretty excited to peep this

Gonna check out durarara before getting back on the SoL train

I feel this lol I’m taking a short break from SoL s*** for now. But you should add Hinamatsuri to your list. One of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen

Hey I really enjoyed this new MHA episode

Deku and Bakugo's new training dynamic is weird but at least it's development for Bakugo?

It was kind of a chill and wholesome episode for everybody, it felt more eventful than the competition episodes because I actually cared about what was happening

The Bakugo and Todoroki collab fight was fun and cool

    Positive feelings overall

  • Jun 14, 2021

Unrelated but I think it'd be cool if MHA had a Venom type villain

  • I love boichi's art

i think its only being an "elitist" watcher if you are an "elitist" about it like do you get what i mean?

like i wouldnt call someone an elitist for watching flip flappers but i'd look at em funny for having a sense of superiority if they had it because they watched flip flappers

  • flizzy

    Watch the Yuuji/Todoh fight

For sure decided to just finish S1 was almost done anyway

Ya, I get what you mean. I have the same thoughts as you on what elitism actually is. It's just that I've seen so many people call other people "elitist" just because they happen to like niche shows, that I can't help but associate those shows with the word now lmao. I've seen people get called elitist just because they liked PreCure lol people are getting too loose with the term.

I actually think you've seen a similar amount of anime as me in terms of time spent. But you happen to spend 500 episodes on Naruto for 1 completion, while I spend 500 episodes on a bunch of 1 or 2 cour shows for like 30 completions.

Ah, that's true. A lot of my time in my childhood watching anime was spent on Naruto/Bleach (and even some One Piece that I refuse to catalogue until I finish it/catch up to current) so that blocked a ton of time

binged bofuri in a day, enjoyed it way more than i thought i would. the show was wacky mmo bullshit done right, some of the game exploits and busted skills that they found had me dying

The most "elitist" anime I tried watching is The Tatami Galaxy

Might try it again some day but the first episode gave me a headache

Too bad, the story sounds interesting

My update and rankings on the shows I’m seeing right now:

    1. Vivy (9/10): Absolutely fantastic and no surprise this was gonna be anime of the season. The fights, the animation/art, the incredible story being told, the music is just all top tier and I love how we finally get an original anime that isn’t afraid to take risks with its characters

    2. Fruits Basket: The Final (8.5/10): slightly worse than s2 for me so far only because I feel the show could never match s2s vast scope and ambition in how much it opened up the world and lore of Fruits Basket. Obviously as it is now seeking to close things out, things feel a little more simple, but still beautifully done at a lot of turns.

    3. 86 (8/10): Honestly this is the real surprise of the season. What felt like it would be a generic mecha turned out to be one of the most maturely told stories of the season and one of the few anime to really deeply show a care for its side characters. Sawano is obviously on another level with the music here as well.

    4. To Your Eternity (7.5/10): At times this still feels like a “try not to cry” challenge when they try to make you sympathize with certain characters but the concept is still very interestingly done and it’s a unique watch for sure.

    5. Megalo Box s2 (7.5/10): So far this has been a major improvement to s1 and I’m loving where things are going even though it seems things will get a little generic with this ending stretch.

    6. My Hero Academia s5 so far (5/10): It has definitely picked up a lot in the last 2 episodes but before that s*** was a slog to get through. Excited about the 2nd cour tho

I watched some of the first ep and then dropped it. Just felt extremely generic to me.
