Started watching Berserk recently. A little over halfway finished w the original season now. Some of the drawing isn’t that good, especially for episodes where the plot isn’t going far, but the general atmosphere is pretty incredible

you might wanna check it out since every anime of berserk ends up taking out parts that are pretty crucial information to the story. it also covers like one arc of it

    Finished Umamusume

    Season 2 >= 1 >>>>> 3

First season was really fun, second season was sports kino and the third season was .. extremly underdeveloped in anything it was trying to do.
They should've focused on other Spica members and built Kita/Dia up in the background for one more season. Anyway the writing of the franchise is in danger of running in circles, hopefully the movie offers sth new.

Every entry is basically going to boil down to "I want to win races," but I feel like the series has done a decent enough job of going about it with different themes.

S2's has the overarching theme with Teio and the well-trodden theme of sheer perseverance in the face of everything life throws at you (as well as how sometimes sheer perseverance can't do anything in the face of reality like what happened to McQueen). It also has (in my opinion) Rice Shower's more interesting narrative theme of becoming the villain just because you ended up beating the fan favourite, and dealing with those consequences.

S3 had some great stuff too, but it tried too much at once. The weight of expectation on Satono Diamond during her races as she was the shining hope of the Satono family, and how that kept compounding as it seemed like she could never get that fleeting victory and bring joy to everyone that supported her and looked up to her probably could have been an entire season on its own. Kitasan Black has her theme of being a dominant star whose body is slowing down and having to contend with that reality, which ties in with the theme of S3 in general being about the legends of today inspiring the future (e.g., Gold Ship losing in her retirement race and the effect it has on Kitasan Black, Kitasan Black and Cheval Grand in episode 12, Satano Diamond and the younger members of the Satano family)

If you think S2 was the best then basically you're gonna be waiting for Cinderella Gray to come out.

Yeah too much at once is the right way to put it. Duramente, GolShi, Cheval Grand, Satono Crown, none of them had the impact Rice had in season 2. Honestly GolShi ep annoyed me, she deserved more focus than wrapping it up within one ep. In general I don't like how the Spica members pretty much got relegated to background cheerleaders.

I do wish they would focus on some different races (which the movie will I think?). Like this was now the third time one of them went overseas but we haven't had any focus on that.

I see Cinderella Gray features Oguri Cap Already classic in my book, she is one of the reasons that made season one fun.

I definitely think they made a mistake making the Spica members recurring characters that show up throughout the main seasons, which like you said resulted in them being relegated to background cheerleaders since there really isn't that much airtime to explore all of them properly. They played their part in season 1 being the veterans that helped the newbie get up to speed with the school/competitions, but they were kinda unnecessary after that. They seem to have learned their lesson though because a lot of the most recent entries like Road to the Top, the movie, and Cinderella Gray all have one-off groups of characters that don't have a role in any of each other's stories (except for TM Opera O appearing in both Road to the Top and the movie shes just f***ing goated like that.)

I’m not finished with the anime but I’m getting near the end, and there’s definitely been times where I’ve felt a big jump in time/narrative between the episodes

    Still really good stuff tho

I started reading some of berserk to see what the anime left out and, well, I already thought some of the anime scenes hinting at or getting into sexual assault were trending a little far in the direction of ā€œmale lead has motivation bc female lead might get raped.ā€ like it was happening multiple times, and in a drawn out way that really undercuts the narrative’s development of a relatively strong/complex female character. at least imo. I suppose one could argue it’s not really her story, and I wouldn’t disagree (from what I’ve seen), but you can still handle side characters better than that imo.

anyways, the manga had this rape that was so p***ographic in its depiction, and so long, yeah I don’t think I can invest anymore :/ like, obviously it’s a ā€œdarkā€ show that doesn’t hold back on the uglier sides of existence, but you can explore all that in a mature fashion, and I wasn’t really seeing that in this area. the anime did have a really great atmosphere tho, and a very cool if abrupt ending. It’s too bad they didn’t get more seasons, bc I’m sure the narrative stays interesting, and it’s a cool world. Love all the surreal horrific imagery. Also, it was pretty satisfying rolling episode 1 back after seeing the conclusion.

also—this isn’t meant to be a larger critique of Berserk as a whole, just responding to a particular aspect.

There were definitely moments while reading the manga that left me emotionally drained, and some of them weren't even explicit. Sometimes, as you pointed out, insinuation alone is enough. In the climax of the Golden Age arc, I think the author had to depict Griffith in the most horrifying way possible, which tragically involved causing unimaginable harm to the two people who loved him most.

But I will say this, as the story progresses it changes from being so dark and suffocating to a more optimistic and adventurous tone. The situation with Casca was heartbreaking until the very end, but along the way, you'll come across several other well-written female characters.

berserk gets into some pretty dark topics early on but its never used lightly, glorify said topic, or used in a way of having the "hero save the damsel in distress". it one of the many ways miura depicts the world of berserk and how truly grim the world can be to any and everyone. but it also shows how will power can help overcome some of the hardest tasks thrown at you.

not sure how far you read and i don't blame you if it made you uncomfortable in some areas but i really would recommend you to keep on reading, its one of the most fufilling stories ever
