I’ll do you one better and point out that Kurt Cobain couldn’t play or sing for s*** but he still managed to make classic records.

By playing music with a structure. He didn’t just go in and play random notes on the guitar. He played chords in a certain order and rhythm.

Damn so Andre knew what a motif was 10 years ago but forgot by the time New Blue Buns dropped

What I originally meant was yes, a piece that’s actually played on an instrument. And in this case the technical ability would be some level of understanding of the instrument or composition or notes or chords

If we were to extend it to just pieces without vocals, the same could apply but in that case the technical ability would be more likely to be rhythmic or structural, something that suggests purpose to how the music is put together and technical ability with a sampler or DAW

Show me the hip hop ones. Technical ability isn’t limited to instrumental training though. Hip hop producers have technical ability with their sampler or program. I can’t think of any hip hop beats where the producer is just pressing random buttons hoping for the best

They're good at computer but not musically trained, which is what it seemed like you were talking about

if its strictly just about putting effort into something then yes no one can argue that Andre has put in enough effort to make fluent instrument music if what you say is true

...that's suggesting the measurement for something being artistically valid is the amount of effort put in which is a point I disagree with, you could train for a thousand years and still make boring pieces that don't make anyone feel anything

you don't need to win these semantics battles to back up that you don't like this EP, you're allowed to dislike it without having some intrinsic point to it all

Suggesting that there is a baseline level of effort that should be put into music and playing an instrument isn’t the same as suggesting that ā€œmore effort=better musicā€. I feel like that’s a cop out. Effort isn’t the measurement but it is a pretty basic expectation. Without any effort, dedication or study you risk sounding like a child. Which can be cool in certain context (The Residents are an actual good example of this) but this isn’t one of them
