the first time we encounter jeff, he has the upper hand and gene gets paranoid as s*** about getting exposed. in this ep gene turns the table to get him off of his back.

maybe jeff was always meek but this ep was the first time jimmy saw him with full clarity.

there weren't any re-writes and it'd make sense for gene to have a skewed perception of a normal guy as evil as f*** if he's paranoid about getting found out in that moment.
