Howard's compassion was just as fake as Jimmy's. The man was all learned civility. Power is pity or whatever.

So you feel he felt sorry for him? I disagree that’s not what I gathered

Very true, even when Howard and Kim were in tears about it, he brushed it off completely

Word all that plus theres still the Kim problem. A lot of people thing shes gonna play him. I could go either way on that but that would definitely be what pushes him there if not this

Either way hes deep in the game now and hes gonna have to adjust one way or another

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those numbers, I knew it was 1216 — one after Magna Carta, as if I could ever make such a mistake! Never, never! I just-I just couldn't prove it! H-H-He covered his tracks, he got that idiot at the copy shop to lie for him

You think this is something, you think this is bad, this, this chicanery? He's done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No, he orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And I saved him! I shouldn't have, I took him into my own firm! What was I thinking?! He'll never change. He'll never change, ever since he was 9, always the same. Couldn't keep his hands out of the cash drawer. "But not our Jimmy, couldn't be precious Jimmy!" Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer?! What a sick joke! I should have stopped him when I had the chance! And you, you have to stop him, you— Yeah, sure. The Sandpiper settlement? HHM's share will be substantial, absolutely. Even though I humiliated myself. And my clients and peers will whisper that Howard Hamlin's a d*** addict... you're right. I've worked my way through worse. Debt. Depression. My marriage falling apart. Oh, yeah. I've been sleeping in the guest house for the better part of a year. Ah, just one more thing good old Howard has to work through. But, yes, I will land on my feet. I will be okay. But you? Far from it. You two... You two are soulless. Jimmy, you can't help yourself. Chuck knew it. You were born that way. But you? One of the smartest and most promising human beings I've ever known... and this is the life you choose."

I think he had the manners of someone of his status. If he had actual feelings I doubt he'd run a successful law firm or have his marriage in shambles. He's a calculated, cynical person with a golden facade. It was like Victorian chivalry challenging Jimmy to a boxing match. His marriage shows how hollow that stuff is. All he knows is work to fill the actual void inside of him.

Let's not forget how Chuck was kind of manipulated by him as well. Now he gets brought up like a totem by Howard to throw in Jimmy's face.

    idk if already posted but

Vince Gilligan admitted that the characters of Chuck McGill and Howard Hamlin developed differently than initially planned. Chuck was going to be the wise older brother who would provide Jimmy with advice and Howard was going to be the nemesis and foil in Jimmy's life. However, after a few episodes, the actors, producers and writers all agreed that the trajectory of the characters would work better if Chuck was the true nemesis in Jimmy's life and Howard was the flawed, sympathetic friend who wanted to help Jimmy. "Chuck was never going to be the bad guy, and Howard was always going to be the one to cause problems in Jimmy's life. What's wonderful is working with such a talented group of writers and actors who aren't afraid to change things and are flexible with trying out different scenarios. I think the way Chuck and Howard have developed fits much more with the theme of the show and offers so many more rewarding outcomes than our original vision," said Vince Gilligan.

i love that everybody involved in the production leaves the ego aside and does what's best for the characters. im sure the original way would've worked fine, but the new trajectory they chose ultimately gave us a much more nuanced and interesting story. a truly incredible cast and crew
