He 100% feels she would have tried to negotiate for presients safety vs allow him to be killed there is no way you believe his views align with hers by the end. Especially when she is deleting kill photos and he is just hungry for more. He helps up the woman he sees hungry for her and immeddiately taking the kill photo of their friend because he knows they have reached the same level of despair

Jesse reaction was more believable because they set up that very moment. “Can you get the shot as I’m getting killed” or whatever line Jesse said in the beginning. They had her arc from timid and scared to fearless and getting the right shot. I never once believed Joel was some soulless a\*\*\*\*\*\* who would walk passed his friends death. He literally cried more than Jesse in this movie lmao

They died doing what they wanted to do. They had no clear reason to live by the end. They covered foreign wars. Now them seeing it in their own country what do they have to live for

we don't even know the political affiliation of the president or why they desire him dead . Its meant to be senseless. People were expecting some long drawn out speech from the president. President who oversees the entire military and funds the military industrial complex to only see it turn against him

they don’t have to have the same view. What I’m saying is, the way they established his character for 99% of the film wasn’t the same person they showcased in that last moment. To completely ignore your dying friend after you’ve been crying all day is weird. They never established a “I’ll kill you if you get in my way” type moment. They never established any of that with his character. He never treated anyone as if they were disposable. Once again if all what you’re saying is true, why tf would he overly protect Jesse at the start when she was a weak link and a LIABILITY to his goal. He’s so “soulless” over his goal yet he’s bringing along AND protecting a liability? The same liability who’s the reason his 3 friends got killed being she jumped in dudes car and they had to go rescue her.

No Lee said she would take the pic of Jesse dying. I pointed that out earlier when I said Jesses reaction makes sense. It was a nice set up and pay off. That has nothing to do with Joel’s off brand reaction

He has become a monster when he is taunting the president before he dies. He is gone. He at that moment knows he has nothing to no longer live for. Also in that moment if he grieves too much an cries too much why would they not kill him? He is also disposable. They have him taking photos but they don't need photos taken by him. If he shows even the slightest bit of regret or crying in that moment he is better off dead to them. I definitely understand those who think ending is abrupt, could be expanded upon or not a full punch. She openly said "they could have died in a worse way at least it was quick " and the same happened to her. She choose to dive in front of a young her essentially

The whole interaction with the president I’m fine with. I like that he didn’t get a FULL interview and just a quote. The abrupt ending I’m cool with. I would’ve hated if they did an epilogue of “here’s America now after the presidents death”…..I simply just don’t like how he walked right passed his friends dying body. I think Garland could’ve written that moment better OR established earlier that he truly never gave a f\*\*\* about Lee. Cus I honestly never got that vibe at all

I don't think this will fully raise a discussion to be clear because that ending will fall flat for many. I do think though its absurd and factually wrong to say there was no message.

Feel like Garland trolled on them with that interview many thought going in that it would be heavy political but politics plays very little into the film it’s more focused on the opportunistic nature society has capturing imagery during tragedy. The big money shot the journey is for is a crazy thing in context. The war is just the background, the optics of it don’t matter. They following where the gunfire is like a moth to a flame

Is this a reach? I noticed after the first run, Jesse was sitting against a wall that had crayon all over it. To me that showcases her innocence, child-like. Next we see her in the stadium surrounded by graffiti. To me that feels like teenager. Idk it seemed like a nice visual way of showcasing her growth/arc. Idk if Garland did that on purpose or not.
