Afrobeat, UK rap, dancehall and their respective artists weren’t necessarily globally appealing in 2016. Certain pockets yes, but Drake didn’t have to embrace it nor the artists and put it out as studio album.
The criticism he got from doing that at the time indicates it was a risk that paid off handsomely.

On god she was praising the album and the way it was selling calling it a victory for hip-hop. But then she U turned like she got instructions Stop telling this lie. I always maintained that the album had weak bars and good production. I'm still happy for the album's success but that doesn't change the fact that it's still weak as a body of work. I never switched up anything.
