With both acts they have fanbases who treat them as if the sole/main reference point for their sounds/styles, mostly because they do not go back & listen to 90s rap. People who recognise the Doom/Dilla/Madlib/Premier etc. production used on early Joey mixtapes solely from those mixtapes without any knowledge of those producers.

I think that's another reason why I hate stuff like Silk Sonic since the people who tend to rave about those revivalist/cosplay projects never go back and listen to the people who actually birth those sounds. It's like folks who hear a Inflo Cleo Sol beat but never go back to Soulquarians & hear the fully fleshed out version of that sound.

had a date a couple weeks back where a really mid Cleo Sol song played in the bar & my date said it was one of her top 10 favourite songs ever & I was flabbergasted because it was so bland & formulaic compared to its inspirations.
