Mainstream music was bland af this year. In fact, 2023 was probably the blandest year for mainstream rap since 2014.

    Even Utopia couldn't save it.

But the underground rap scene and some non rap genres ate well this year.

It will only get worse from here.. I don't know what you expect, but there's no money in the business anymore

  • Nov 11, 2023

Threads like this show the downside to “being in the know about music”

Like yeah, we can post about bubbling artists and s*** but yall dont ever get a chance to even enjoy music like the “normies” do.

That wasn't the point I was trying to get across. There are no funds available for big artists and big pop eras.

Usually I used to discredit this “___ is the worst year in terms of music” discourse. But this year, I can’t come to think of 5 good mainstream releases, a good breakout artist taking the world by storm, a song that defined the year, a solid debut album, an elite music video, nothing.

Only year to come close is 2014 but even that one had a D’Angelo album and Piñata and a strong resurgence of mainstream pop music with Pharrell’s Happy and the peak of Sia, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, etc… meanwhile 2023 is a year that will not be remembered in any genre of music except maybe Country but that’s it.

    What do you think?

You’re either just entering your early 20s or you only listen to one genre of music

  • Nov 11, 2023

    😭😭😭

  • Nov 11, 2023

Yes for the simple fact that you have people in their mid 20’s and up acting like s*** isn’t bad because they don’t wanna be looked at as old

We’re at a place where anything is accepted because you don’t wanna be insulted with strawman attacks lol

  • nigga you said it in OP
    country had a resurgence

Most of my favorite artists dropped this year so 2023 has legit been one of the best years in a long time for me personally

  • Nov 11, 2023

    pinkpantheress dropped so no

  • Nov 11, 2023

"a good breakout artist taking the world by storm, a song that defined the year, a solid debut album"

PinkPantheress fits all of these. She really broke out in the mainstream this year with a massive pop hit that defined the year and her debut album is way more than just solid.

  • Nov 11, 2023

You can't think of a breakout artist taking the world by storm? Seriously?
