Breasts are undoubtedly useful for feeding babies, nice to look at and fun to play with – but from a purely athletic perspective – t*** on a runner are about as useful as t*** on a bull…
Mechanically…
They add weight.
A woman who wears an F-cup bra is carrying around about 2.4 kg (over 5 lbs) of extraneous baggage!
They move her centre of gravity upwards and forwards.
They move with every step she takes! Even in an industrial-strength sports bra - large breasts bounce causing discomfort or even pain.
Thermally…
Elite runners have very low body fat. (A female marathon runner will have about 10-15%, as opposed to 12-20% for a sprinter or 16-25% for a volleyball player) Eliminating fat not only reduces the weight that must be carried – but it also reduces heat-retention. Women’s subcutaneous fat is an efficient heat insulator – which is great if you are wearing a minuscule party dress on a cold night out – but bad if you are running for miles. Heat-dissipation is important in distance running. A woman’s breasts aren’t pure fat. (The milk-producing parenchyma won’t shrink on a diet) but the overall reduction of body fat will tend to hit breasts quite hard (particularly the less dense variety)
Socially…
Girls with larger breasts are less likely to be naturally ‘sporty’ at school. Apart from the discomfort aspect already mentioned – there is also the ogling that tends to accompany ‘big girls’ running. Quite a few girls are going to be lost to sport as (temporary) embarrassment makes it awkward to jog.
