It does help if you know the story of Sir Gawain first. There are some truly odd things that happen in the film that will leave you clueless if you don't have any background knowledge

I went in with zero background knowledge and was just perplexed the entire time, went home and read up on the story and watched it a 2nd time. Made it even more enjoyable (I still enjoyed it quite a bit even when I knew nothing. The scenery is absolutely unreal)
