of course 1k isn't enough but we should have systematically planned for this like 10 years ago, the US has lead a string of internal failures of letting the entire county's economy survive on the end of a string of woefully employed workers living end to end. small businesses are the backbone of this country and constantly get shafted in favor of banks and financial institutions like goldman sachs. now that we're in this mess we're honestly f***ed. the selfishness we now see pervading the country with grocery stores and stuff is just another aspect of the system we've created.when was the last time a politician in america asked citizens to sacrifice something for the greater good? WW2?
to start, in the very least small businesses should be granted one time long term 0% or 1% interest relief loans (essentially reverse bonds). states should then be mandated to step in to cover/subsidize minimum payroll capped at a certain wage (because some selfish f***ers will try to abuse this for personal gain as usual by claiming high wages). that would at least be a start.

nationalism is a dirty word. the nation is an imagined community, word to Benedict Anderson. Americans are encouraged to look at their country as an “idea”. why would I sacrifice anything for an “idea” when that “idea” is predicated on the primacy of bankers and corporations getting richer and the working class getting poorer
China may be an authoritarian f***scape but whatever China is is still venerated. Americans are expected to say “America was never great” or equate America with the stock market and Fortune 500. The coronavirus exposes that there is no there there anymore.

I don't disagree with you. It's my opinion that post-70s, America has exchanged collectivist nationalism for an individualist illusion of what nationalism means. The hyper-individualism of this country is honestly disgusting sometimes to me. When the American Dream comes up, it's always grossly misrepresented as a buzzword - politicians now misrepresent the idea of the american dream as either meaning "literal open borders for immigration" or meaning "the gubberment does nothing and everything is just anarchocapitalism". The American Dream was distorted into consumerism when it was supposed to be deep community and collectivity which allows allows an individual to achieve their own aspirations.
We need to start working to fix these deep-rooted issues, which are interlinked between culture and economics. I really think UBI is the wrong idea here, even temporary, and attention needs to be given to small businesses. UBI is an individualist concept. You can't revive people's faith in an idea by funding banks and airlines. Small businesses are not only beacons of communities but often represent passions and sacrifices of their owners. They also employ more people in this country than any monolithic financial institution. If they don't work to save them now they may as well openly admit they'd rather the US literally implode than give an inch to their constituents. People need subsidies and relief, they don't need small amounts of money slapped into their mailboxes (don't even get me started on the lack of infrastructure to even attempt to fulfill UBI theoretically right now on short notice).

ubi will help people and will be a crucial component of the future imo, but i agree that we need to support small businesses: something needs to be done about 1.larger companies slowly monopolizing and buying up competition 2.mom n pops getting pushed out by rising rents in cities.

I completely agree I just think UBI might be too literal of an implementation especially on short notice or with the lack of centralized federal financial infrastructure. That's why I think subsidies right now would work better. Combatting big business and corrupt banking should be like #1 priority besides further helping small businesses.
