Every election prior to the one last fall the third largest was the social democratic/socialist party. Usually they compromised about 15% but in 2011 they managed to hold the second largest amount of seats and were favored to win the PM seat until the charismatic leader died

They’ve been on decline ever since and in 2019 even the quebec nationalist party (an ideologically center left party) managed to win the third largest amount of seats so now the leftist party is 4th largest

So in short they’re not really the reason why, they hold little power. The liberal party is in a voting agreement deal with the quebec nationalist party and the social dems but the liberals kinda just still do what they want

The real thing is that canada in general is just more left wing and the liberal party has been creeping more to the left on issues like wages and even more robust immigration policy in order to steal even more voters from the socdem party and make them basically extinct.
