They still have ways they can improve and be more inclusive but that’s completely different from only covering mainstream hip hop. They don’t have Grammy money or respect among fans/artists so they focus on the business aspect as well which forces them to lean heavier into the mainstream because that’ll insure views. If people stopped looking for alternatives that don’t exist and supported the hip hop awards in its current condition it might can become more like the Grammys. They still manage to show a little underground and international with the mainstream.
