If you need to get back in the car while refueling, touch a metal part of your car that is not near the fuel tank area before reaching for the gas nozzle. Touching a metal portion of your car will dispel any static charge that you may have created while pumping gas.

Yeah the fumes could kill you, but the static electricity could cause a spark on RARE occasions that won't just cause a fire, but explode. YOU don't have to worry about liquid gasoline, it's the fumes that ignite!!! The restricted area is right at the pump handle and the opening of the gas tank
