People prob wrote it how they did because they have existing interview(s) with Nick that touch this topic and it adds more juice to a story they want for clicks. Their standards aren't high and other sloppy sites like TMZ aren't reporting it in this way. There's a heap of context to these events we simply don't know.
From what I saw and what he was representing, I don’t see that there was anything irresponsible about reporting that the guy had a history with d****. It’s entirely relevant to the story

ANTIThere’s nothing similar about it. Hackman’s wife died from hantavirus and he, being well into his 90s with multiple ailments and diseases, including Alzheimer’s which greatly distorted his sense of reality, wasn’t capable of taking care of himself.

It's not relevant to the story unless there's evidence presented that it was relevant. Has he been d*** tested? What were they fighting about when the murder took place? As of now, People is unnecessarily inserting a moral panic into this story to ragebait boomers.

a history of d*** addiction is relevant no matter which way you spin it, now did they need to mention it? no. but it is a factual thing that he himself has spoken at length about throughout his life
