Yes and no. 4K upscaling is standard in 4K TVs today and proper 4K upscaling algorithms can make 1080p content look better in 4K

Does it look better than 1080p? Yes if done properly

If you look at 4K movies released today I would say 40%ish is upscaled content

CG is rendered in 2k as rendering CG in 4K would be insane file sizes and insane work times. So basically any movie with heavy CGI is upscaled to 4K and not reallly true 4K

75-80% of movies released in 4k today are upscale. Maybe even more

The music industry themselves see this as a viable option and worth doing. Have you noticed all the old youtube music videos that they've been replacing with 1080p upscaled videos? they look better. The only difference is I'm not doing it to old 480p videos and rather videos already in 1080p.

I get that this isn't worth it to a lot of people due to file size. 24bit FLAC audio also isn't viable to a lot of people because of file size yet people still collect it. I'm just making this content that I think is undeniably better quality available to those that are interested.

Seems like it boils down to what it was filmed with, how much CGI, and how much the company cares

S*** there was that outrage like a month or two ago bc people realized that a bunch of 4Ks were faking HDR and only going up to like 200nits
