My comment was that Putin- like Stalin, isn’t a very nice bloke, wasn’t trying to start a high school history lesson. Zelensky is no angel either but he’s not the one invading countries.

Anniversaries are also commemorated, not always celebrated.

Why are people ITT struggling with the word anniversary? anniversary literally means the date in which something began/ended… hence minutes silences on the ANNIVERSARIES of the start/end of previous wars e.g. WW1 and WW2.

No, you’re correct. Anniversary is used in a nearly exclusively in fond remembrance of something. We don’t have ‘anniversaries’ for the Holocaust, slavery, or 9/11, we have memorial days for those things.

An anniversary is the date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year, and may also refer to the commemoration or celebration of that event.

Pearl Harbors day is referred to as ‘Remembrance’, 9/11s day is called ‘Memorial’, and Challengers day is just called ‘Space Shuttle Challenger disaster’ day. Anniversary is synonymous with those terms but they aren’t necessarily interchangeable because of the common social context of them… with anniversary being a positive one.

Call any of those days an anniversary in front of any normal person and they’re going to look at you weird.
