how can we bring back the mixtape culture?
i lowkey was just thinking about this, livemixtapes, datpiff, spinrilla, etc it was its own ecosystem/subculture in rap

I had a whole type up on how selling physical CD’s in the streets would be great for today but then I remembered that today’s music kinda sucks
Look at yall finally coming around
But nah man streaming killed all that young people have no idea how to download and find music not algorithmically fed to them from their monthly subscription service.
So until artists smarten up and abandon streaming we’re all f***ed.
Have to turn your back on samples or get real creative with your samples
And of course don't have a f***ed up contract in the beginning where they fully control your releases in totality

Some artists make killings of physicals still. I think it’s 38 spesh, his physicals sell for hundreds sometimes I hear
I think Westside Gunn makes a lot off physicals too. At least used to when his output was higher
Same reason why we can't get a new Def Jam game.
I remember I had a tape on LiveMixtapes back in the day. That was like a dream come true lol

That's Crazy
It seemed like all you had to do was make a decent tape and pay for that lil banner s*** and you could start your motion out of nowhere. You just needed a LiveMixtapes banner and a WSHH video or even just a decent viral YouTube video and you started the path to being in the game
Vs now ironically being on Apple/Spotify/YouTube relatively doesn't mean s***
it’s sad that no one raps on each others beats anymore
they can't cause those artists labels will put that s*** down in a HEARTBEAT.
Ask Smino why his S.A.D. mixtape got taken down from soundcloud in like.....10 seconds lol.

Not a big fan of him but didn’t Tyler do that not too long ago? Plus J Cole dropped that prequel to TFO albeit in a weird way. Also Lucki with ICEMAN

been saying, we in the end stage lol.

yea but it’s rare and no one does full tapes off that anymore
honestly it fell off when weezy had to start using youtube remake instrumentals

It surprised me that Cole was able to put the Clue tape on streaming but I'm sure Cole can make some calls the average nigga can't lol

Tyler got a relationship with Westside Gunn and was able to do that (pause)
the "albeit in a weird way" J Cole thing is honestly just what someone with an avid fanbase can afford to do. The pay what you want model more artists could probably benefit a lot from but I don't know how much EVEN takes off the top. Plus those beats are damn near "public domain", could Cole have pulled off the same thing if he was using people songs from the last 10 years?
Lucki, also has an avid fanbase so he can afford to just drop a plot twist remix on youtube/instagram and basically 6:16 it lol.
the streets are already over fed with music my nigga

The rapping over other beats mixtapes got killed by lawsuits not streaming.
Wiz and Curren$y were facing legal issues for performing the songs on their mixtapes and Mac Miller was sued for mixtape songs getting too popular.
Obviously they wouldn't work on streaming either but they were dead before streaming got really popular

didn’t DJ Drama get raided over that too

Nah I feel I do miss that era too but I do appreciate it nonetheless when they do
Streaming killed the mixtape. Streaming killed freestyles and remixes. Everything is money money money. They want an arm and a leg for a sample. There’s no money in hip-hop (and music in general) anymore

yeah that was for selling physical mixtapes. that was like the first tower to fall then it seemed like everything was all good for a few years with people dropping them online for free then that got patched too.
