“Lawyers for the generative AI music creation platform own up to using licensed music without permission by "circumventing YouTube’s encryption”

“Suno has owned up to scraping audio data from YouTube to train its AI music models in a new US court filing.”

“The US generative AI music creation platform — run by CEO Mikey Shulman who once said people "don't enjoy" making music — responded to a joint lawsuit by UMG Recordings, Capitol Records and Sony Music Entertainment filed on 1st September at the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Music Business Worldwide reports. The scraping practice of licensed music was previously confirmed in a hack, according to a July report, and was used on Deezer and Genius, as well as YouTube.”

“The 12th page of the document, obtained by MBW, states, "Suno admits that audio data was obtained from YouTube for use as training data using YT-DLP," one of two software tools (the other YT-DL is not named) at the centre of the complaint used "to circumvent YouTube’s encryption and scrape copyrighted recordings from YouTube", according to MBW.”

“In May 2025, Suno told labels it had downloaded YouTube audio files using YT-DL and YT-DLP, which the 1st September filing is citing as a formal disclosure.”

“Suno's lawyers argue that Suno's scraping actually qualifies as "quintessential fair use" of copyright, using the defense that the plaintiffs "anticompetitive": "On information and belief, Plaintiffs have engaged in anticompetitive activities that extend an unlawful monopoly over the production and commercialization of music... Suno’s AI tool uses a back-end technological process, invisible to the public, in the service of creating an ultimately non-infringing new product."

“The lawsuit dates back to 2024, when Suno and Udio were sued by Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group for training their AI models with licensed music without permission. (Warner later settled with Suno). Suno has previously asked the court to throw out the claims, arguing last October that record labels aren't people and therefore can't be "persons injured" by the actions.”

”In July, Suno lost a landmark copyright case in a German court also over the AI model training practices. The Munich Regional Court ruled that Suno does not have permission to train its AI with music represented by German music collection society GEMA.”

“Last month, Suno announced it is launching a vinyl-pressing service for AI music generated on its platform.”

If everywhere you put out gets scraped by data to get played by a 60 year old's grandpa's honda civic under an unrecognizable AI artist, gotta ask yourself "wtf are we doing rn"

Whole ai’s training data is everything on the internet. Nothing is off limits

What even is a safe place to upload at this point

easier to fake sounds than fake a voice with AI in music

I'm saying with 4+ years worth of acceptance and a 4 months worth in realizing the only person that made this "industry" worth fighting for no longer walking the earth meaning I aint gotta lie to myself no more lol.

I’m honestly at the point of not putting my work out on mainstream platforms, if they going to work with AI companies who unethically using this technology to pushing away talent.

I’m happy that Bandcamp is taking a stand against this, but I even have to question if they’re remain firm on this decision.

It’s a tool, but the wrong hands and companies are using these things.

With that said. I might not fully abandon it, because I would say mainstream streaming platforms is probably the best platform for singles, because the amount of attention that you can get from a single is pretty impressive.

But overall albums, videos, and art. Yeah I don’t think it’s a wise decision to put everything on these platforms during this time of the industry.
