I'm (thankfully) not totally tapped in to the AI world, but I have a fair level of familiarity because of my job. I've seen people in my sphere and online treating this like a nuke in a way I've never seen before, even compared to the endless, meaningless AI-bro hype I've witnessed over the years, so I figured I'd make a thread on it. I tried to research this fairly thoroughly, but I apologize if there's any inaccuracies or major points that I missed.

Hate to make two AI scare threads in a single week, but this s*** is straight insano. It's terrifying that this stuff is being spearheaded by some of the greediest, most soulless individuals on planet earth. Can only imagine what exists behind the scenes at this point. After a few days of rumors, teasers and leaks, OpenAI has officially shock dropped the smartest (public) AI model ever. Initially only available to select enterprise customers, Astra will be rolling out to Pro and Plus users over the course of the next week.

Summary

  Note: Astra is not the first model to utilize GUI interaction, but it is likely the first to be suitable for wide, general usage, as opposed to shaky performance for niche use-cases. Opus 5 and Sol have scored very well on GUI benchmarks, but Astra's focus on this functionality in tandem with it's various other improvements likely make it the comfortable winner.

• Astra is also a monster at end-to-end game development and 3D spaces. Videos of expansive clones of Minecraft, Terraria, and Kart Racers with actual depth (game progression, multiple boss fights, complicated systems) generated by Astra from a single prompt and no pre-made assets are already flooding social media.

• Astra seemingly blows every other model out of the water when it comes to alignment. For non-nerds, that means Astra actually does what you want it to do, even in complex, lengthy tasks, inferring the user's intentions FAR better than any other available model. You may have heard about the recent OpenAI incident where hundreds of internal agents they were testing secretly coordinated to form a "swarm", escaped the lab, and successfully performed a massive cyber attack on another company, simply because they determined it was the most optimal way to score well on their tests. That is an extreme example of poor alignment. A more common example would be asking an AI to, say, build a program, but it misunderstands what you actually meant by your prompt, and as a result, wastes money building something you don't need. Astra is (according to OpenAI and pre-release users) extremely good at inferring what the user actually wants/needs, while avoiding unwanted and/or detrimental actions.

• Potentially less interesting, but still worth mentioning: Already helping solve previously unsolved math puzzles, and discovering previously unknown software vulnerabilities, things you always hear about the big models. Note that due to U.S. government intervention, the cyber-security / cyberattack capabilities of Astra are initially gated from the public, but will be rolled out to specific approved users in the coming months.

That being said, I mainly felt compelled to make this thread because of the reactions of people I work with on a daily basis that are very AI-skeptical or outright Anti-AI. Everybody from IT types all the way to our designers, all of whom have bemoaned the forced AI usage in the office, and many of whom are wayyyy more tech/AI-savvy than me, not that I'd consider myself a total slouch .

I also thought the videos were pretty nuts, but we won't know the day-to-day capabilities til more regular people get access.

I know OpenAI has had incidents where they've been shady or misleading about benchmarks, but I was under the impression that they'd largely cleaned up their act since the o3 s*** in 2024

Obviously they're gonna spin their internal benchmarks in the most charitable way possible for marketing, but I thought it was pretty standard practice for benchmarks to be independently verified soon after release

I think a lot of the anti-AI sentiment is warranted. Social media is being dominated by slop. People are losing their jobs. It's being shoehorned into jobs that don't benefit from it. Memory shortages are causing impassible barriers to entry in the tech world for regular people, as well as causing companies to pass those increased costs along to consumers, and that's just the short term stuff, doesn't even take into account the long term unsustainability of it all. Not to mention the issues that come with our economy being propped up on the AI ouroboros, people getting measurably stupider with AI usage, and the damage it does to the arts.

On the other hand, I think the wholesale rejection of AI in it's totality is also untenable. It may temporarily work as left-wing / gen-z rallying point, but the popular narratives will have to shift away from "AI bad" to "what x is doing with AI is bad", because I highly doubt there's any world where we all come together and sing kumbaya. This s*** has military applications and soft power implications. The United States is not going to willingly let another country surpass it on the military/intelligence fronts, and I'm sure it's in the gov's best interests for the premier AI labs to be US-based.
