I know we all love There will blood and The Master but I think Magnolia is severely underrated and might be PTA’s best after rewatching today
Tom Cruise performance alone >>>>>
Thoughts?
I genuinely think that Punch-Drunk Love is his best movie
Honestly bro PTA is like QT and Scorsese where you can basically argue any of his work is this best

For me if I had to rank his movies I would put it as
Punch drunk love
There will be blood
The master
Magnolia
Phantom Thread
This is the film that really had me thinking. Just from the troubles kids suffer from from abusive parents. To how we could be connected to joe smoe up the street or across the seas
This movie is so multi layered and PTA’s most ambitious effort to be able to tackle so many characters and storylines and make them connect.
And he addressed the “coincidence” issue in a clever way.
God tier PTA: TWBB, The Master, Magnolia, PDL
Great tier: Boogie Nights, Phantom Thread
Good tier: Hard Eight, Inherent Vice

I would put Phantom Thread into god tier then we would have the same ranking.

What about boogie nights or just doing top 5?

Then I would have Boogie Nights, Inherent Vice and Hard Eight as last
I prefer Phantom Thread but if I compared just by my first watch of each then Magnolia is much better.

It can go in God tier if it's lower than the other 4.

I'd rank those as
Phantom Thread

The Master
i'm guessing that's a hot take although honest it is
Its f***ing incredible, watched it years ago and still think about every now and then. The style is so on point
The aimee mann soundtrack is chefs kiss
Fr Bro. He said he wrote the script while listening to the soundtrack and the songs inspired the plot I think and he even took a lyric of hers and put it in the movie when Claudia said “now that we’ve met would you object to never seeing me again”
He actually almost got sued over Tom Cruise character cus he got a hold of some recording of a pick up artist and basically stole his lines word for word
Its all subjective. He's never made a bad film.
Personally for me its Boogie Nights, The Master, and then Punch Drunk Love.
Love the different opinions about what’s his best. Not one clear cut answer. Further proof how great PTA is.
