I downloaded Linux mint on my surface pro 3. It runs pretty well but really I have no reason to use it other than fooling around.

What do you use it for?

I'm quite interested in learning about computers, using linux forces me to do that.

moving away from guis and relying more on the cli is wonderful.

if I could play all of the games I have on Windows on Linux, I would desert Windows forever and never go back to that piece of s*** operating system

Linux just feels better imo. scripting and doing most things from the command line helped me learn way more about my OS then clicking on GUIs

what were you trying to do with it

planning on setting up a mini-itx build for home theater purposes (media center & console emulation up to 6th gen, maybe even 7th gen tbh depending on what hardware i can get my hands on) and to double as a small file server/seedbox. i have a few drives lying around that won't fit in my main pc anymore and still want to put them to good use

I love AMD chips but for media servers Quick Sync is just too powerful

I use an 8th Gen i3 since it had the best Quick Sync performance at the time for the cheapest price, yeah you don't need the latest stuff for servers you can kinda just throw together what spare stuff you got with a few new parts

sounds good I use a FreeBSD jail for my seed box and then Docker for Sonarr and all that stuff

yeah Mini-ITX is really clean for putting next to your tv for console emulation

been thinking about adding 10gbe to one of my servers and putting it in a tiny ITX case for Mac OS storage / Games

it's funny you mention that regarding quick sync i was looking to grab an amd cpu for a vega APU build. kinda saddened to see VCE still falls short of quicksync tho

xcfe is very light weight but I feel like it's kinda dated with the look

I really like Gnome on my high performance machines and Mate on lower performance setups

xcfe was the first thing I ever tried after using Gnome forever
