I don’t expect everyone to like this album. If you don’t have a spiritual connection to God, then this album probably isn’t for you.

I don’t care about all of the “It was better when it was Yandhi…” talk. I didn’t follow those leaks closely so all I have to go by is the finished version of JIK that was released

    SELAH
    FOLLOW GOD
    CLOSED ON SUNDAY
    ON GOD
    EVERYTHING WE NEED
    WATER
    GOD IS
    HANDS ON
    USE THIS GOSPEL

    All great songs.

This album was missed potential. So much was cut and removed for basically no reason

Hahah a connection with the spirit helping this album?

With this elementary 'my first day in church' level of writing

Another goofy Materialistic Christian yapping about how God blessed them with riches while billions people across the world live in poverty

Nigga couldn't even deliver a good version of Water, his verse is the laziest kind of filler

If he really tryna write a Christian album in its purest form, he should make an album about how Genesis 12 is the basis of Manifest Destiny/expansion colonialism

'Yo Ye, this a album about christianity, why you talking about having to price your clothes high so that you stay Rich Rich instead of just Rich? '

See, I feel like this is only if you followed the leaked/unfinished stuff. I didnt. So I'm judging this album based off of what was presented in its final form.

"With this elementary 'my first day in church' level of writing"

Everything doesn't have to be Nas level writing.

I think the simplistic writing on this helps because it makes it more digestible.

We can't hold a gospel album to the same standards as a "rap" album.

For people looking to pick up an easy listening gospel album that doesn't make you work too hard, this album hits the nail on the head.

You responded respectfully to my fairly inflammatory post, i appreciate that

It's not that I need the writing to be Nas level, it's moreso that his extremely bland gospel writing reflects how he was not even serious about his faith, he was just trying to hide behind his shallow form of Christianity to absolve himself of accountability & to pretend things in his life were better than they were. He probably wasn't actually reading the bible & Sunday Service Choir performances aren't really a replacement for Church, it was self serving.

He was a Christian in the same way Republican Politicians are, for his own ends. Or like an equivalent to a Celeb checking into rehab to repair their image. I can imagine asking him to quote a bible verse would lead to one of those rare moments where he completely freezes up because he's been caught out on his 'BS'

  • I liked it a lot

    Never understood this debate OP

Some of the most emotionally moving hymns have simple writing

JIK is a classic in my eyes as a contemporary Christian album especially with the other options out there rn

Man, I believe in God 100% and I don’t think I can even quote a Bible verse lol.

We can’t judge someone else’s relationship with God.

They’re just not really used to (contemporary) gospel music, and as a result, they hold it to the same standards as rap music.

I recall a video or tweet where someone showed there was heaps of quotes and references to the Bible on this album (or it might’ve been from the old Kanye podcast)

I thought the writing was bold but the only memorable great lines were bars that could’ve been on any Ye album

My favourite gospel songs are not lyrically super intricate or scripture heavy, good gospel to me is always emotionally resonant and soulful
