Alright. i've been going through wu-tang's back catalogue lately, and I am just baffled at how RZA is able to make some of the most incredible, minimalist, but textured beats that perfectly complement a rapper's verse and vocal tone... and then the next track on the album just throw absolute dookie water on top of some drums.
take for instance on Tical.
you have "bring the pain" and "what the blood clot", two great RZA beats, but nestled in between them is "All I need"

Why is Meth making a love song over what sounds a default synth patch a 12-year old is playing combined with the sound of an alien biting in a very crispy apple?
On Liquid swords Killah Hills 10304 has some brilliant GZA raps, but wtf is that synth line?

this is the same album, same producer that has Shadowboxin'
i can't think of another producer who has people on such high highs and low lows, sometimes onthe same album
requisite guitar center beat

Alchemist
@op hating on Killah Hilla 10304 already makes you not being taken seriously dawg.

i love the raps. not the synths, it has grown on me, marginally, on relistens
Liquid Swords is literally one of the greatest produced albums of all time.
and we talking bout synths but that wild ass synth on 4th Chamber literally what completes that beat.
Given RZA unorthodox melodic style there's bound to be some stinkers thrown in there

100% it's pretty lioned
sidenote, RZA's verse on 4th chamber sounds like a precursor to what lungs and phiik are doing these days
He was 90/10 in the 90s and 10/90 since the 2000s

OP doesnt get quirky synths and wants it to be our problem
f*** you OP
nah, i fkn love quirky synths. i just think the particular quirky synths make no sense on that particular song and completely takes me out of the song.
Like, i'm trying to vibe to some mafioso raps and it sounds like the castle music in a cute indie video game.
why?
If this wasn't made by the RZA y'all would be clowning tf out of it

funny you mentioned a video game here, didnt RZA sample castlevania on cuban links?
in any event while i do agree rza sure hit some low lows with his beats past the golden age it is definitely not a 50/50 ratio
its insane what the guitar center beat has done to his reputation man

You could've made this point without using Killa Hills, sometimes cheap/chintzy sounds are hard e.g. Neptunes stock sounds during their prime
I understand this point although maybe you could've saved some of this for a Swizz Beats thread tbf, Money Cash Hoes beat is basically a keyboard being randomly pressed with a bass & drums on top
I reckon he lost part of his musical soul in the flood tbf, it's even worse than losing your work in the modern era given how much harder things were back then. Gotta give Q-Tip his props for managing to come back after the fire which basically destroyed the entire archive of Tribe, their & his unreleased stuff (Fabulous Fleas, alternative versions of tracks etc)
