are traditional western funerals absolutely overblown and basically a cirlejerk by their very design? I don't see how someone in their right mind would pay a five figure fee for a send off that could be done alot cheaper in myriads of ways.

I certainly don't want a grand service because I don't see the purpose where my money could be better utilised in being used in my will to pass on to my next to kin.

Many individuals are scammed by the exploitative and opportunistic nature of the business. It's just a guilt trip on steroids that people have to have this huge occasion.

I don’t know if that relates to it being egotistical tho. Wouldn’t doing it a cheaper way still be the same in that way? The whole process is really more about the grieving than it is about the deceased if we’re being real, so I don’t see it as a particularly ego driven thing.
